A True Anomaly: The Placenta
Wow wow wow, so many things to say but I’m going to keep it brief. The placenta represents the unity of parent to baby and resembles the essence of nurturing. The parent’s body creates this customized organ that is ever-developing as the pregnancy progresses. It gives vital energy to the baby and is full of the proper nutrients the baby needs depending on its stage of growth and personal demands. Every cell within the placenta is created for the growing baby and it’s constantly adjusting to maintain the baby’s optimal health. By the time the pregnancy is at full term, the placenta is roughly the size of a dinner plate. Once the baby has come earth-side, the parent births the placenta; this is the third stage of birth. The placenta gracefully detaches itself from the uterine wall and makes its way through the birth canal the same way the baby did. The placenta continues to transfer nutrient rich blood to the baby for as long as the umbilical cord is attached. Once the cord is clamped and the placenta is separated from the baby, the parent can choose to do multiple things with the placenta. The parent can choose to bury it somewhere sacred and possibly plant it with a tree or flower they finds special. They can dehydrate it and encapsulate it to use as a daily supplement postpartum or they can freeze it and incorporate it into smoothies or teas. The placenta is a source of life from the moment it begins to develop through to the birth and beyond for those who choose to ingest it.
